Exchange 2010 period in netbios domain name

Hello,

we just try to upgrade to Exchange 2010 and after installing the first
client access server we notice that the EMC failed initializing with the
following error (with admin account of course):

The following error occurred when getting user information for 'netbios
domain\username':

The operation could not be performed because the object 'netbios
domain\username' could not be found on 'domain controller'. It was running
the command 'Get-LogonUser.

The username it is looking up is mine and I have full administrative
privileges in the domain. If I exit the EMC I get the same result but with a
different domain controller.

It seems this is caused by the period we have in our netbios domain name. Is
anybody out there who can confirm this or is there a solution for this
problem?

Do you have a period in your netbios domain, too?

I am a consultant but I have yet to have a customer who did that.

I could replicate the issue:

I installed a NT4-domain with a period in the domain name and upgraded that
domain to Windows 2003 native moved...

On a second server I installed Exchange 2010 and have exactly the same
problem as mentioned in my other post. The poblem occurs if the logged on
user is in a domain which has a period in its netbios domain name.
If you have a multiple domain environment you can work around this, if you
create an Exchange Organision Admin in another domain, which has no period
in its domain name.

Ed, maybe you have the possibility to try the above at your customers site.
I would appreciate if you could confirm the issue. Thanks for your interest
in that problem!

Aren't names with periods in them assumed to be "DNS" names?

I know that these are the only disallowed characters in the 1st 15
characters of a NetBIOS name:
\ / : * ? " ; |

It sounds like the name is being taken as if it is the name of a local
machine (with the character to the right of the period being the TLD).

From the section titled "NetBIOS domain names":

period. The use of non-DNS names with periods is allowed in Microsoft
Windows NT. However, periods should not be used in Active Directory
domains. If you are upgrading a domain whose NetBIOS name contains a
period, change the name by migrating the domain to a new domain
structure. Do not use periods in new NetBIOS domain names."


I think this is something you need to take up with Microsoft PSS. It
sounds like it is beyond the sort of thing that is likely to be resolved
in a newsgroup.
