Exchange Server - Understanding "Send As" permissions

I have got a test Exchange server set up in a VM, talking to an equally-test
AD instance. My user object exists in AD, as EXAMPLE\hume, or
userprincipalname hume@example.com, and I have used exchange to create a
mailbox, primary email is "brandon.hume@example.com".
OWA works great; but if I join a local Windows 7 PC to the domain, use
Windows Live Mail, and send email I get the dreaded "Client does not have
permissions to send as this user" error.
I have turned on SMTP protocol logging, and I DO successfully authenticate.
I am connecting to the connector on port 587, TLS enabled and everything.
However, I cannot send any email as myself unless I explicitly grant SELF
I am mostly just trying to understand why this would be necessary. My
reading seems to indicate that "Send As" should only be needed when you are
trying to send as a different user (spoofing a reasonable word?). Is
that inaccurate? Does any user need SELF/Send-As permission to send as
themselves?

There is no way to change tcp port on the SMTP connectior, but there is a way to do it on the Virtual SMTP. If I change the tcp port on SMTP server I will be able to send, but will not be able to recive since my smtp server will not be listening on port 25. 2 Exchange Server I moved a client from a standalone server running Exchange 2003 (on Windows Server 2003) on to a new server running Exchange 2007 (on Windows Server 2008 as part of Microsoft's Small Business Server 2008). Since then, the client s), I got the same results, so I do not think this is helpful!
