the name could not be resolved the bookmark is not valid - MSX 200

Hi All,
I am beating my head on the wall trying to solve this one.. worst of all its
my own new machine that I cant get working :(

Brand new build of XP, patched up to current levels, installed office 2007,
went to map my mailbox and getting "the name could not be resolved the
bookmark is not valid" and thats where it stops.

I even rebuilt the whole machine again but no luck.

DNS and other such things are all working fine, no issue with clients
connecting to email etc.. just on this machine which is a new computer to the
network.

I am a domain admin, I have tried logging on with the exchange service
account and it still wont map my mailbox (same error).

It seems to be a problem with GAL permissions but I have had a look at ADSI
edit and it seems like it should work (though there are a LOT of permission
type entries on that item).

I have seen this happen before but dont know what we did to fix it (or if we
ever did fix it).

Can anyone help?!?!?!?

This is Exchange Server 2007 SP1 with rollup 9 installed. All client
machines are Outlook 2007.

Thanks.

Did you join the computer to the domain?

Yes, the computer was put on the domain and run a few install programs
(Office and etc.. standard build) everything seems fine.

I also tried removing the machine from the domain and connecting to the
mailbox (while off the domain) but the issue persisted.
Note that the last time there was an Exchange service account was Exchange5.5.

Note that the last time there was an Exchange service account was Exchange
5.5.

You should not be a domain admin. Domain Admins has certain things
explicitly blocked in Exchange. Anyway, best security practice is to not
log into e-mail using an administrative account, instead separating your
personal and administative duties with separate accounts to minimize the
risk of an e-mail-borne attack or one from any other routine web surfing or
whatever having Domain Admin rights to attack your network.

You might check to see if you can log into that mailbox from another
workstation; that would tell you that the problem is probably with the
workstation and not your account or mailbox. Also try OWA.

Make sure the firewall is turned off or properly configured, too.

Bookmark not valid errors are indications of permissions issues to the
global address list when we are trying to query objects.

Its the damnedest thing..

I logged out of my desktop workstation, logged the laptop in to the network
via an Internet stick and VPN connection.. and Outlook mapped my profile no
problem at all...

After that it works perfectly on the network :S

I thank you for all your suggestions.. I am leaning towards a problem with
OAB/GAL permissions.. but thats a problem for another time.

Cheers fellows.. much appreciated :)
OK I know its been a while.. but here goes.

OK I know its been a while.. but here goes.

So we got a new person starting the other week.. yesterday they were
installing Office 2007 and trying to configure Outlook. Completely forgetting
about this issue, I ran through the auto setup process where the client can
figure out the users name and the mail address with no issue.

After a bit, it comes back with name could not be resolved, bookmark is not
valid.. great!

Remembering what happened last time, I unplugged the network cable, got one
of those USB 3G internet sticks and plugged it in, fired up the Internet then
VPN'd to the office network, but this still failed.

Desperate, I disconnected from the VPN and 3G Internet, rebooted the
computer (still with no network cable) and got the user to log on to their
domain account on the PC (using cached credentials, but still disconnected
from our network). After they logged on, I fired up the 3G Internet, then VPN
to the network.

I then fired up Outlook with its auto-configure wizard and it worked on the
first go, no hassles at all.

This was a brand new DELL with factory OS on it..

I wonder if it has something to do with the bindings of something on the
network adapters or some such.. because this problem seems really weird in
that it wont work connected to the local network, but it does work via a VPN
to the network :S

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be the case at all?
In case anyone from the future goes back in time and see's this post..

The other day, new laptop from DELL (same as last one) for a new user which
we just created (also like the last new user).

Put it on the network, ran our usual bag of tricks script to set things up
and this one mapped the Outlook/Exchange profile first go.. No issue at all.

Very very strange.
