- Mailbox: Clustered Mailbox Server (CMS) - either SCC or CCR, failovers
automatically.
- Hub Transport: If you have more than one Hubs, they load-balance
automaticlly. No action required.
- Edge: If Edge servers receive inbound internet mail (are targets of MX
records) - this can be done either using multiple MX records, or using
network load balancing (MX points to A recort that maps to the virtual ipo
address), for outbound mail: Send Connectors can have multiple source
servers (like Bridgeheads on SMTP and Routing Group connectors in Exchange
2003).
- CAS: Network load balancing

Not sure what you mean - the Clustered Mailbox Server role, which is the
only role that can really "failover" in terms of the CMS (aka "EVS") being
moved to the passive node, cannot co-exist with any other server role.
Besides the CMS role, the Edge Transport server role is the only one that
can't co-exist with other server roles.
The Hub Transport, CAS and UM roles can co-exist.

You can NLB CAS & HUB buddy! For the best redundancy (nice English eh?) put
more than one HUB per AD site.

There must be a typo there, as you can not NLB hub.

You cannot NLB Edge or Hub.

You cannot NLB Edge or Hub. And you cannot install Edge on the same server
as CAS.
Wait, I know I read 2 roles can be NLBed. So its CAS & UM then?

Wait, I know I read 2 roles can be NLBed. So its CAS & UM then? I hate
getting older and mis-remembering things, plus I may never touch a UM
server - ever.

NLB is for CAS only.
Asked By Scott Schnoll [MSFT]

NLB is for CAS only. In SP1, we'll introduce the ability to use NLB on Hub
for client connectors only.
For Mbx, you use failover clusters.
For Edge, you use multiple computers and multiple MX records.
For UM, you use multiple computers configured to route calls in a round
robin fashion.
For Hub, you use muttiple computers, and resiliency is built in.

Interesting. I have NLB'ed Edge and it works fine as the second server has
the cloned rules of the first. Neither belongs to AD, neither has any
connection to the other.
I have used NLB, but that doesn't mean it is supported (although I swear
earlier documentation did say it was).
I guess, if you think about it, the outside coming in piece using DNS round
robin will work as if one server fails, SMTP and the way it uses MX records
will get the email to the other server. However, going from the inside out,
the Hub needs to talk to the Edge. If one edge is not available per the
subscription, it should try the other.

Isn't NLB at the network layer? If you use NLB for Edge boxes or IIS SMTP
svc or Postfix for that matter - does NLB care? Does Exchange know or find
out it's being NLBed and stop working?

Agreed, but what I think Scott is refereeing to is Microsoft testing and
official support. You can use NLB on an Edge server, works great, but will
Microsoft support it?

The issue as far as I understand it as far as Hubs go is that they use self
signed certificates, and that with multiple hubs and multiple certs but yet
sharing the same MAC and IP that some pretty funky (you might need to look
up this highly technical term) things happen, especially from what I have
seen when it comes to the transport dumpster and replays of transactions.
However, Scott might be able to add more or different reasoning.

My question was more regarding Edge boxes - I know Hubs have built-in
load-balancing.
Also, in support of what Scott said - one should be able to virtualize the
client connector's fqdn/ip so remote POP3/IMAP clients don't need to know
about different Hubs in case of failure.
