Exchange Server - Exchange 2007 SP1 partial install trouble

Okay, so I've just tried to install Exchange 2007 SP1 (release version) on
my Exchange 2007 server, running on W2K3 R2 x64. The service pack
installation found no problems with the Exchange installation and proceeded
fine until mid-way through the "Mailbox Role", at which point it proceeded
as far as upgrading content indexing and then failed, claiming a fatal error
had occurred removing the Microsoft Full Text Indexing engine, Windows
installer error 1603. The two events (appended below) were logged, in that
order.

Anyone else seen this? More importantly, anyone else know how to fix this
(not had success on web or MSKB searches)?

Or failing that, is there a method to back out the SP1 install, since as it
has been partially installed - even though I can get the services started
back up and the core of the mail service here running - I'm having a few odd
issues with things like OWA, presumably since the Client Access role has
been upgraded and the Mailbox role hasn't?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Alistair

Alistair,

I had a similar situation while upgrading Exchange 2007 with SP1 and this is
how I solved my problem:

1 - Uninstalled the aborted installation of the Mailbox role from the
command prompt at Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin\:
exsetup /mode:uninstall /role:mailbox

2 - Removed the Microsoft Full Text Indexing Engine for Exchange using:
Start/Run
MsiExec.exe /X {6574fdc2-40fc-405a-9554-22d1ce15686b}

3 - Then continued the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 installation and installed
the Mailbox role.

I hope that this works for you too.

Regards,

Santos

Thank you very much, this solved my problem straight away!

(Actually, I didn't even need the first step; just running the msiexec
command and then restarting the service pack installation worked fine for
me.)

Thanks again,

Alistair
