Exchange Server - Names in Global Address List

Asked By Green Biro on 01-Jan-11 08:49 PM
Our IT guys have just set up MS Exchange for us. Unfortunately, we have
been provided with a rather messy Global Address Book e.g. containing legal
(rather than preferred or 'known as') names as well as duplicates and
various other untidy stuff. They tell me that nothing can be done because
it is automatically pulled from the Active Directory and that, at our site,
the AD is populated automatically by an external process. Whilst the latter
is true, I'd be suprised if Exchange Server did not offer a way of editing
individual 'Display As' names in the GAL.

Please can someone tell me if this is possible or if it is true that the GAL
is so dramatically constrained by the AD as they are suggesting. NB
Anylinks and / or screenshots would be most appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to change GAL display names
indiviidually e.g. The name format is set to "forename surname" but the
forename in AD is set to "William" whereas people will search for him as
our personnel database.

Thanks

Exchange grabs your display names for the address book from AD. You
can change them individually as long as you have control of AD. If it
is true that you are populating AD from an external source, you will
have to edit that source to change your display name.

Thanks

To my knowledge, only the firstname and surname is brought in automatically
into AD.

Is there a separate field in AD called something like "display name" which
could be used to manually override the default "firstname surname" entry.

Thanks

You can change that but that is also part of AD.

That's great. Thank you. However, just when I had the ammunition to shoot
them with, it seems that our ICT Support Team have worked it out as they
have now carried out my instructions and set up the display names as I have
asked......
